Aesthetic (cosmetic) surgery of the nose, also called rhinoplasty, can improve the shape, size, and general appearance of your nose.

It is important to discuss your medical history with your surgeon. Your surgeon will conduct a painless examination of your internal nasal structures, skin quality, size, and shape of your nose.

Most incisions will be placed inside your nose, where they will not be visible. Some potential complications that may be discussed with you include bleeding, infection, and reactions to anesthesia.

To prepare for surgery, if you are a smoker you may be asked to stop in advance of surgery. You should also avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs, because they can cause increased bleeding.
Surgery is performed in a hospital and you will be moved to a recovery area where you will be permitted to go home after a few hours. Any discomfort can be controlled by medications. A splint may be placed on the bridge of your nose to protect it.

For the first couple of days after surgery, you should restrict your activities and sleep with your head elevated. Bruising around the eyes and cheeks is most apparent during the first three days following surgery. Most discoloration will disappear within a week. Noticeable swelling may last for several weeks. Minor swelling most frequently affecting the nasal tip, may continue for many months.

Within a week or ten days after surgery, you will be able to return to work. Most normal activities including exercise can usually be resumed within three weeks.

You will return to your plastic surgeon's office for follow-up care at prescribed intervals.
